| Cumberland Road, Partington - Main
Bathroom This room really speaks for itself both in
design and functionality. We were given a basic specification
for the job which included a requirement to move the wall between
the bathroom and adjoining bedroom to create more space to allow for
a separate bath and shower.
The room was an odd shape which caused a number of design issues,
for example the room was L shaped and the WC was located in the very
short and narrow part of the L - the soil stack could not be altered
in any way as it ran up through the middle of the house rather than
outside. This meant that the small part of the L had to be
retained as the "WC corner" but wanting to install a bath and shower
meant that the bath had to be a corner bath - if not careful, you
would have to climb through the bath to get to the WC!
Then to further complicate things, our customer had a baby....not
the crying variety but a large wall hung sink which they had seen
and fallen in love with - it was in fact lovingly referred to as
their "baby" - this thing is huge (90cm wide) and it's weight cannot
be described without re-living the process of fitting it during
which there were a few choice words....
After a number of attempts and screwed up pieces of paper, we
managed to find the right components to do the room justice and we
had a plan down on paper which was viable.
Then we were asked for a radio, so we specified a split unit
where the radio tuner resides in the loft with the speakers and a
small remote eye mounted in the ceiling - you even get a remote
control with it just for a bit of extra fun.
Then under-floor heating, so we specified a Warmup cable system
with their new XSTAT thermostat which makes programming so easy - it
is just like a mobile phone with the up/down, left/right and select
- all menu driven.
Then our customer asked for recesses - to be tiled and lit! - and
it went on, the result though? - A simply stunning room (we think
our customer chose some fantastic tiles) and an ecstatic customer.
Once again, our cameraman has managed to get himself in the shot
- a claimed mistake, unavoidable was the word....we assure you that
if he continues it is he who will be shot!
AWI designed, specified, supplied and installed this bathroom.
From start to finish the job included:
- Removal of the existing suite, wall and floor
covering
- Demolition of the stud wall
- Re-construction of the stud wall including
thermally and acoustically insulating in line with building
regulations including dry-lining of the bedroom side of the wall to
remove the cost of skimming - this is a modern way of creating a
smooth paintable surface which only involves filling the joints
where the plasterboards meet
- Re-wiring to remove the socket which had now
become part of the bathroom and moving of the light switch for the
bedroom; Wiring to add a new RCD protected shower circuit; Wiring to
add a new RCD protected circuit which provides a switched supply to
the LED lights in the recesses, the radio which is in the loft
(small white speakers on the ceiling if you look carefully) and the
under-floor heating; Wiring to add a shaver socket near the sink
- Preparation of the walls including re-dry-lining
- Construction of two recesses including
installation of LED lighting - to be tiled as per pictures
- Construction of a false stud in the corner where
the WC is located to "bring" the WC out centred between the bath and
door wall
- Construction of a false stud in front of the
window wall to increase the window-sill depth to something more
usable
- Re-plumbing as required to support the new layout
- Installation of PVC ceiling
cladding
- Installation of a 5 * IPx4 mains voltage halogen
down-lighters
- Installation of a chrome remote motor extractor
fan ducted outside
- Installation of a stereo FM radio including
remote control and white ceiling mounted speakers
- Walls fully tiled (ceramic mosaic tiles) including
contrasting feature tiling within the recesses
- Floor fully tiled (porcelain tiles) including installation of Warmup under-floor heating system
- Installation of the new bathroom suite including
large corner bath with seat, pentagonal Coram shower enclosure Triton
T300SI Wireless remote-pack electric shower (the
main part of the shower "the white box" is located remotely
(under the bath in this case) leaving an elegant appearance within the shower
- even better for technophobes - the control panel in the shower
uses wireless connectivity to drive the white box), giant massive
large very heavy (we think that makes the point!) Porcelanosa Noken
wall hung basin with under-slung towel rack, corner WC and
accessories
