unfortunately, the phantom AWI camera man has been a little lapse
again and forgot the camera on day one so the before pictures are
not these best - he apologises and will be tortured to try to ensure
it doesn't continue to happen.
This en-suite was the typical new build bathroom (the house was
approximately 9-10 years old), square 760mm2 shower enclosure with
corner opening doors in the right hand corner of the room with sink
to the right. The toilet was on the wall facing the door and
the radiator was on the window wall.
The toilet in this room was not connected to the main soil stack
(the large waste pipe outside the house) but to a "secondary stack".
Because of the distance of this stack from the main one it needed
additional venting (the vent is the grilled cowel at the top of the
soil stack and is meant to allow air in and out of the sewer to
prevent vacuums and excess sewer gas build up).
With a "secondary stack" it is common to use an air admittance
valve or "Durgo" valve which allows air into the sewer but not back
out - this replaces the cowel and means that the vent can be inside
the property since there will be no smells etc. This system is
normally employed to reduce the amount of visible pipe-work outside
the property.
This particular job had such a valve which can be seen in the
fifth "before" picture down - it was originally built into a pipe
casing by the builders which was large, unsightly and prevented the
toilet being mounted on the window wall. We re-worked this
pipe to still conform to building regulations but to allow the pipe
to be concealed meaning the toilet could be mounted flush to the
window wall.
Other changes included are listed below.
From start to finish the job included:
- Removal of the bathroom suite, tiles and plaster
- Re-plaster-boarding where required
- Door re-hung to be hinged on the outside opening
to the left (originally the door was hinged on the inside opening to
the right)
- Installation of white high gloss PVC ceiling
cladding
- Installation of low voltage halogen lighting
- Installation of a chrome effect extractor fan,
ducted to the outside
- Re-plumbing including moving the radiator to
provide for a new towel radiator near the shower; re-working of the
soil stack to allow the toilet to be mounted flush to the window
wall; re-plumbing to move the sink
- Re-wiring to move the shaver socket from the old
sink location to the wall in-between the shower and toilet
- Walls fully tiled (ceramic tiles)
- Floor fully tiled (porcelain tiles)
- Installation of the new bathroom suite including
toilet,
wall hung basin, Matki shower enclosure - still one of the best in
our opinion, thermostatic mixer shower, ladder style towel radiator and
accessories
